A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy,” stated the country's president.
The leader confirmed that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The president stated plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the immediate past president, whose time in office finished the prior year. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.
The building of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a notable growth of its responsibilities in national works. They were built at an accelerated speed, surpassing expectations to be partially opened before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently fueled persistent questions over safety standards.
In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a primary political opposition called for an prompt suspension in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This pause was proposed until the completion of a full technical review. The party declared that the tragedy "calls for immediate answers."
In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been functioning in complete accordance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and management of these national undertakings.
