Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for several hours when numerous of them entered the country's airspace.
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend floated over the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and near the border with Belarus.
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the weather devices.
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a approach that remains highly susceptible to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that this activity become not financially viable and present no risk to civil aviation."
These airspace violations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
