A person who contaminated treats with sedative and gave them to minors at a summer program in the area has confessed to sexual offenses against two young males aged between nine and ten.

Jon Ruben was taken into custody after eight youngsters and an older person fell ill at the facility in July.

The senior citizen, from Ruddington in Nottinghamshire, admitted guilt to a multiple criminal counts when he was present at the courthouse on the end of the week.

Nevertheless, he disputed one of the sexual offences he was charged with, which was involving a young boy.

Ruben was held in detention before a subsequent court date on 28 November.

'Treat game'

Mary Prior KC, handling the case, described the defendant's actions to the legal proceedings.

She said his targets were under-privileged children who were staying at a summer program which he operated.

The man played a "sweet game" with the youngsters, the prosecutor stated, in which he would go into the children's bedrooms when they were settling down and ask them to ingest treats "rapidly".

She stated to the judge Ruben had played this game with the young males "repeatedly", and children had previously fallen ill the next day.

She said the man had been successful in rationalizing this for many years as the children being "overwrought by enjoyment", until his stepson had concerns in summer 2025.

Mrs Prior KC stated further: "This year his family member had suspicions about the situation, for good reason.

"They decided to investigate in the defendant's belongings."

Mrs Prior KC said objects including baby oil, petroleum jelly and syringes were discovered, and his stepson notified the law enforcement about his worries.

She explained the man continued to play the "treat game" with six boys that evening - July 26th - and they were everyone unwell the following morning.

"Law enforcement" had not gone out by that time," she added.

The regulatory agency, the Independent Office for Police Conduct, previously told that it was reviewing the police response of the events.

The prosecutor stated the children were unable to walk properly due to being ill, so the stepson contacted the authorities once more.

She said the defendant then conducted the "treat game" in a space of five youngsters.
