Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Evacuations Confirmed

The island nation has been hit hard by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of over a million residents.

Authorities reported that the massive storm caused extensive sudden floods, storm surges, mudslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, leading to the evacuation of millions of residents across the country.

Widespread Damage and Emergency Operations

In Pandan, Catanduanes, one of the worst-hit regions, emergency crews documented rising waters reaching the tops of houses and homes washed out by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel rescued 14 individuals stranded on the roof engulfed in flood in a low-lying neighbourhood,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. One resident frantically contacted us, reporting his home’s roof was about to be ripped off by the wind. We rescued him and four relatives.”

By Monday, officials confirmed at least two deaths: one from drowning in Catanduanes and a second individual who died when her house collapsed on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Forecast

The intense storm was downgraded to a typhoon on Monday morning while moving over the main island, home to the national capital.

According to meteorological authorities, the storm’s sustained wind speed dropped from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts peaked at over 170 mph.

The cyclone is projected to lose strength while heading in the direction of Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The national disaster response service indicated efforts were ongoing to assess damage to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately 6,000 evacuation centres were activated to accommodate tens of thousands of households.

Recent Context and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck shortly following another severe storm, that claimed hundreds of lives and left another 135 missing before moving on to Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Searches for the missing persons had to be suspended recently over risks to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is making cyclones stronger and common. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to impact the nation in 2025.

Scientists report that the frequency of super-typhoons striking the islands has increased by more than 100% over the last two decades.

Global assessments indicate that severe weather events cause approximately millions in dollars in damage for the Philippines every year.

The nation’s leader declared an emergency declaration on Thursday because of the severe damage caused by the prior typhoon and anticipated impacts from the new storm.
