In a notable move ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of widespread and fatal young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.
"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.
The September uprising was triggered by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
According to the formal pact, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
In a separate event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with a number of leading political figures. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the protests.
Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a credible election is a collective duty. The message affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and fear-free environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
